The president of Nigeria Union of Journalists, comrade Chris Isiguzo has advised journalists all over the country to be extremely careful with the Cyber Crime Prohibition Act.

The National president stated this today Tuesday while interacting with journalists at their new Secretariat at 66 Aba road Umuahia.

Speaking Isiguzo said there is no law in the country that protect journalists adding that the cyber crime prohibition act is a dangerous one for journalists

He said “journalists need to be careful with the Cyber Crime Prohibition Act, if you are angry and made somebody angry you can go in for it, even clicking likes in your phone, you are liable to jail and not to talk of sharing a message that is false, politicians are taking advantage of the act”.

He reminded journalists that media space is changing and keeps revolving. Noting that if you are running an online media, there is clearly defined position.

He disclosed that the next NUJ National election will be digital when delegates can stay in their houses and cast their votes. He reiterated that other institutions like NBA, NPR have moved from analogue ways of gathering and conducting election to digital using phones.

The president revealed that

Payment of professional fees have become so important. He added that according to the NUJ recent constitution review every member is to pay a professional fee of twenty five thousand naira within the financial year, from January to June.

He made it clear that with the new era of social media things are changing, he said it’s an aberration that some journalists still go to cyber cafe to send stories while noting that our phone can solve the problem.

He called on Abia NUJ to give their full support to Josephine Ogwo led NAWOJ in the state adding that there is no faction in NAWOJ in the state.

He however frown that Abia NUJ have moved from one rented appointment to another while he regretted that the immediate past government actually released some substantial amount to complete the new year but was hijacked by an aide to the government and a paltry some was released which could not complete the NUJ Secretariat still under construction.
