By Sampson Uhuegbu
The Eastern Waste Management Company, formerly known as “Imo State Waste Management Agency, ISWAMA”, yesterday, said it has arrested a Staff of the National Blood Transfusion Commission, NBTS, of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, for allegedly dumping toxic waste on the road.
Deputy Managing Director of the Company, Mr. Agbi Isimeme, said, the company ensures that people of the State manage their waste responsibly rather than dumping them indiscriminately.
In an interview with the media, at their office, along Orlu road, Owerri, the Deputy Managing Director disclosed that the Eastern Waste Management Company had invited the Federal University Teaching Hospital several times but the failed to honour the invitation.
“We had warned them to desist from dumping their waste from the hospital’s patients but they refused. Today, we arrested their Staff and impounded their vehicle without opening the waste to know what are inside them. They could be hazardous”.
Isimeme noted, that the company entered into Public Private Partnership, PPP, with the State government for the purpose of management of refuse across Imo and therefore urged people of the State to stop dumping refuse on the streets.
Efforts made by this reporter to reach The mobile phone of the hospitals’ Public Relations Officer, Dr. Jacinta Achonu, to react on the alleged arrest, proved abortive as her mobile phone was switched-off at the time of filing this report.
