NGO CALLS FOR FIGHTING OF CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA

The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FERNAD) says Nigeria rating at the last corruption index was regrettable, he urged anti corruption bodies to brace up and fight the menace of corruption to stand still.

According to the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index reported by Transparency International, Nigeria is the 150 least corrupt nation out of 180 countries.
Speaking the Executive Director of Foundation for Environmental, Rights Advocacy and Development/FENRAD in Partnership African Network on Environment and Economic Justice with support from Palladium USAID Scale Project, comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor disclosed that to get it right a robust legal framework is crucial for the country to come out of the menace of corruption.
FENRAD laments the ugly trend especially where corruption having earlier permeated into our society, took root, deepened and entrenched itself in all our institutions, becoming manifesto, for this reason the new government must strive to end corruption.
Nwafor revealed the last post-election litigations presented us a new dimension on justice Smsummersault, a situation were courts of same jurisdiction are upturning judgments.
“Not too long there was a startling revelation from a certain retiring justice of the Supreme court who alleged that there is corruption in the system”.
Nwafor reiterated that the last administration ruled largely through court disobedience and without regard for rule of law, adding that under their watch, animals acquired uncharacteristic traits such that reptiles, primates and rodent’s swallowed money.
FENRAD disclosed that #160 million worth of vehicles for some 469 lawmakers, most of whom have collected before in the last four, eight or so years ago to the story of a presidential yacht including #70 and #35 billion respectively awarded to the law makers and judiciary
“This is what we get from a nation borrowing money to fund her budget is insufferable”, the Foundation calls on the federal and 36 states governments to wake up and defeat corruption”.
He lamented that in the last eight years, the state secret Service became and actualizing agent of lawlessness. Adding that Court scenes had witnessed an attempt to rearrest some one the court had free or inter-agency rivalry. “The DSS as they are called regrettably became a state within a State”.
FENRAD disclosed that those in monetary policy are meddling in politics even when their vaults are used as the repository of electoral materials, card carrying members of political parties are appointed commissioners in INEC against the oat of neutrality. He noted that all this are not how to win the war against corruption, but could rather sustain corruption.
He explained that to get it right, a robust legal framework is crucial in combating corruption as it establishes clear rules, defines offenses and prescribes penalties, it helps deters corruption practices and ensures accountability and foster a transparent and fair system.
